Van & Driver

Prohibited waste guide

What our drivers can’t take, and why. Not sure about something? Ask us before you book.

What we can’t take.

The law treats these as hazardous or specialist waste, so a van and driver can’t carry them.

Asbestos

Old garage roofs, pipe lagging, floor tiles and boards can contain it. Only a licensed asbestos contractor can remove and carry it.

Gas bottles and cylinders

Propane, butane, camping gas and patio heater bottles can explode in a van or at the tip. Take them back to the supplier.

Wet or liquid paint

Tins with wet or liquid paint, varnish or wood treatment still in them are hazardous waste. Your council recycling centre has a bay for them. Dried-out tins, brushes and rollers are fine.

Chemicals and solvents

Weedkiller, pesticides, pool chemicals, white spirit, bleach and cleaning products in bulk.

Clinical and medical waste

Needles, sharps, dressings and medicines. Your GP, pharmacy or council arranges a clinical collection.

Tyres

Tyres need a specialist tyre recycler. Most tyre fitters take old ones for a small charge.

Oil, petrol and diesel

Engine oil, fuel and fuel cans, and anything soaked in them.

Car and lead-acid batteries

They leak acid. Garages and recycling centres take them.

Fireworks, flares and ammunition

Explosives go to the police or a specialist disposal service.

Not sure? Ask us

If you’re not sure whether something counts, ask us before you book. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you straight away. If a driver finds something on this list on the day, they’ll leave it behind.

What we do take

Nearly everything from a home or garden. Every load goes to a licensed waste site, with a waste transfer note.

  • Furniture: sofas, beds, mattresses, wardrobes, tables and chairs
  • Appliances: fridges, freezers, washing machines, cookers and TVs
  • Garden waste: branches, hedge cuttings, turf, and soil in bags
  • Building rubble and DIY waste: tiles, timber, plasterboard, old kitchens and bathrooms
  • Decorating waste: dried-out paint tins, brushes, rollers and dust sheets
  • Bags of household rubbish, boxes and cardboard

Good to know.

Questions about tip runs and prices

How much does a van and driver cost?+

A single item is £55 to £85 by size, a move £69 to £349 by load, a tip run from £70 and a house clearance from £599. The first 10 miles of a move are included, then £1.80 a mile. Every price is fixed and shown before you book.

Do you do tip runs?+

Yes: single items from £70, loads from £99 (Mini) to £519 (full load), and house clearances from £599. Disposal at a licensed recycling centre is included, with a waste transfer note, and there's no charge for the distance.

Can I get a van and driver today?+

Yes, if you book by 3pm and a driver is free: the earliest arrival is the hour after next. After 3pm, the earliest is 1pm tomorrow. The price is the same any day.

Will two people come?+

When the job needs them (a sofa, a wardrobe, a fridge, or a medium load and up) two people come, and that's already in the price. We decide it from what you're moving; there's nothing to choose or pay extra for.

How far will you go?+

Anywhere in England. A move includes the first 10 miles, then £1.80 a mile, shown in the price before you pay; over 150 miles we give you a quote instead. Tip runs have no distance charge.

Is the price fixed?+

Yes. You see the whole price before you book and that's what you pay: no hourly rate, and nothing added on the day for stairs, waiting or a heavy sofa, unless what you're moving changes.
