Your van and driver in Hemel Hempstead
How it works, what it costs and who turns up.
01
What a van and driver is
A van, a driver, a fixed price – and no bidding.
A van and driver is the middle ground between hiring a van yourself and booking a removals firm.
02
Van and driver versus man and van
Same idea, better promise.
"Man and van" is what people search for; it usually means one person with their own van, quoted on the phone, paid in cash, and you hope they turn up.
03
What fits in each van
We measure in wheelie bins. One bin's worth is about eight bin bags.
Picture a wheelie bin. One bin's worth is a few boxes and bags. Two is a fridge or a washing machine with room to spare. Four is a room.
04
How the price works
Fixed prices, the same everywhere.
A move's price depends on how much is moving, not where you live. A wheelie bin's worth is £69 anywhere in England; a full load is £349 in Salisbury, Sheffield or Southend.
05
Who turns up
Checked, insured, rated – and paid properly.
Every driver is an independent partner who has shown us their licence, their hire-and-reward insurance, goods-in-transit and public liability cover, and their right to work, before they're offered a single job.
06
Lifting, stairs and awkward things
Two people when the job needs them, at no extra cost.
We decide from what you're moving: a sofa, a wardrobe, a fridge, or a medium load and up gets two people, and that's already in the price. There's nothing to choose and nothing extra to pay.
07
Booking, changing and cancelling
Two minutes to book. Change it yourself up to 48 hours before.
Book online for today (until 3pm; after that, tomorrow from 1pm) or any day up to about six months ahead, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
08
Same day? Yes, until 3pm.
Today, if you book by 3pm.
Book before 3pm and you can pick today: the earliest one-hour arrival is the hour after next (book at 10:20 and it's 12 to 1), if a partner's free. After 3pm, the earliest is 1pm tomorrow.
About Hemel Hempstead
Hemel Hempstead at a glance
Hemel Hempstead's cluster of self storage sites near Park Lane, all within a mile of the centre, says something about how often people here are shifting furniture into boxes rather than just between houses — whether that's a studio flat move near the Marlowes Shopping Centre or a clear-out heading towards Apsley. Van & Driver is coming soon to Hemel Hempstead, covering the HP1, HP2 and HP3 postcode districts, and will connect residents with local partner drivers for a fixed price agreed before the move starts, rather than a rate that climbs with the clock. The plan covers the kind of moves that actually happen in a town like this: a single wardrobe going from a house near the station on London Road to a new flat, a half-van run to nearby Abbots Langley and Kings Langley, or a full house removal out towards Berkhamsted. Once live, the service will also handle student removals around term time, furniture deliveries from local sellers, storage moves in and out of sites such as Lok'nStore, and next-day tip runs. For now, bookings aren't yet open in Hemel Hempstead, but the routes and prices — including trips towards Bovingdon and Redbourn — are already being mapped out ahead of launch, so residents can see what to expect before the marketplace goes live locally.
Hemel Hempstead had 95,995 people at the 2021 Census. Furniture and flat-pack from Marlowes Shopping Centre, Riverside and Bellgate shopping centre is a common single-item run. The council's nearest recycling centre is Hemel Hempstead Household Waste Recycling Centre, 1.5 miles away; a tip run with us goes to a licensed recycling centre, with the disposal in the price.
